Job Description

D5 Pre-Sentence Investigator 5262 State of Idaho Apply now for the D5 Pre-Sentence Investigator 5262 role at the State of Idaho. The position is located at District 5 in Twin Falls, ID. Current state employees must log in to Luma and select the opportunities tab to apply for this position. Applications will be accepted through 4:59 PM MST on the posting end date. Summary The Idaho Department of Correction’s mission is to create a model correctional system that provides equitable access to programming and opportunities reflecting a community experience, fostering connections, and restoring victims of crime. Pre‑Sentence Investigators work directly with felony criminal defendants, their victims, families, friends, and employers. Responsibilities involve conducting fact‑finding interviews and investigations of a defendant’s background, recording those facts in a pre‑sentence report, and submitting this report to the court for proper sentencing. These reports must be comprehensive and accurate because of their potential bearing on a defendant’s sentence. PSIs work closely with the courts, and the recommendations made have a direct impact on the defendant’s life and family. Responsibilities Conduct personal interviews with offenders to obtain detailed information on family and criminal background, employment, mental health and substance abuse history, and the offender’s version of the crime. Make collateral contacts with family members, neighbors, law enforcement personnel, attorneys, witnesses, and victims; gather, review and analyze criminal background reports and related documents. Screen information, review notes, and evaluate data for validity, eliminating unsubstantiated, inflammatory, or prejudicial data. Compile information, write a comprehensive report detailing all facets of the investigation, and make a recommendation concerning disposition of the case and outline plans for treatment and rehabilitation available to the court. Write reports according to Supreme Court Rule 32 guidelines and deliver completed reports to the judge, prosecuting attorney, and defense counsel. Attend court proceedings and testify in court to elaborate on or defend findings and recommendations of the pre‑sentence report. Minimum Qualifications Six months of full‑time experience in the criminal justice system, primarily involving in‑depth interviewing of clients to solicit facts and determine eligibility or appropriate course of action. Knowledge of the criminal justice system; at least six credit hours, 36 hours of training, or six months of full‑time experience in offender management or legal processes. Experience writing detailed reports with supporting rationale for recommendations, such as journalistic or business reports; six months of full‑time experience or an internship of at least 150 hours. Proficiency with computer applications for creating documents, collecting and inputting data, and generating reports; at least one year of personal computer usage or equivalent training. Willingness to work with individuals with criminal backgrounds and anti‑social behaviors. Willingness to review documents and graphic materials such as sexual and violent crime descriptions. Benefits The State of Idaho offers a robust total compensation package, including medical, vision, and dental insurance; PERSI retirement benefits; paid sick, vacation, and parental leave; and 11 paid holidays per year.
